Seventh edition. First edition thus, with new introduction by the author. In her introduction, Gilman notes that the primary thesis of her book is the “proposition...that every woman should earn her own living.” While the decade or so since the original publication of Women And Economics had seen widespread acceptance of women in the workplace, the question of how women could balance work and family central to the implementation of her thesis. By 1911 the book had been translated into Danish, Italian, German and Russian in addition to its seven American printings. With the agitation for women’s suffrage in the United States, England and elsewhere, women’s place in the economic as well as political and social structure had become widely debated.
