Photo album.

(Lutherville, MD): np, (1893-94).

Oblong 12mo string-tied album. 35 cyanotypes on rectos of as many leaves. Images all approximately 3" x 2.5". Images identified on versos, with some captioned. Eight larger loose cyanotypes and four loose B&W (probably Kodak) laid in. Original string tie perished, modern tie provided. Very good overall.

Rare photo album of a 19th century all-female college. Lutherville Seminary (later Maryland College for Women), like most other female institutions of higher learning at the time, prepared (unmarried) women for teaching careers. Subjects include both students and faculty: playing cards, riding in wagons, posing for group shots. College facilities also pictured: dorms, classrooms, halls, etc. Overall, a candid and warm look at women's education in the late 19th century. Though commercial photo albums were often prepared as yearbooks at colleges during the 19th century, albums prepared by students or faculty themselves are considerably more uncommon, and those detailing women's education are genuinely scarce.
