LETTER: Autograph letter signed, to Mr. Rockwood; WITH carte. [PHOTOGRAPH]
STANTON SHOWS A LIGHTER SIDE
Stanton, Elizabeth Cady. Autograph letter signed, “Elizabeth Cady Stanton,” to “Mr. Rockwood,”
with an autograph postscript signed, “E.C.S.,” November 22, no year; two leaves, three pages.
In full:
What I desire is that you get the names, all right in a small photograph, & send me two or three,
then I will send one to the artist, who is making the pictures for my book. I do not wish to send
the large picture lest it should be injured. Moreover the book man prefers a small picture to copy.
Am sorry to bother you so much, but we are in a hurry to get all the pictures ready by Dec.
1st. Yours sincerely, .….
Bring your wife down to see us some evening. I will take care not to shock her with any radical
opinions.
Accompanied by an original unsigned carte-de-visite portrait of Stanton by C. D. Mosher of
Chicago.
Stanton’s most well-known sitting with Rockwell came in 1895, the same year she published
The Woman’s Bible. She likely wished to include the portrait in that work, or in her 1898 memoir. A rare
letter exhibiting Stanton’s self-reflective humorous side.
