Compiled by Sarah Harris, this is a series of verses chosen from the Hebrew bible to impress “correct thoughts” upon the young Jewish readers. Isaac Lesser, distinguished American Jewish publisher, articulates the importance of this compilation by Harris, noting in the preface, “a collection like the present has until now been wanting among English and American Israelites”.

Isaac Lesser, founder of the Jewish Press of America, was a prominent Jewish figure in the 19th century, producing some of the first Jewish books in an America scarce of publications concerning Judaism. Along with Sarah Harris’s Select Sentences, Lesser produced many other significant books for the rising Jewish population in the United States.
