First published edition of Sarah Grand's first three-decker. One of the most skillful and notorious of the New Woman novels, in which Grand forthrightly questions sexual double-standards; subjects covered include syphilis and cross-dressing. Her handling of sexual issues has been likened to Zola. The novel was rejected by Meredith for publication by Chapman and Hall because of its handling of sexual questions, but was taken on by the new and enterprising publisher Heinemann to become a major best-seller. Sarah Grand was a member of the Women Writer's Suffrage League and vice president of the Woman's Suffrage Society and was a strong supporter of Josephine Butler's crusade to repeal the Contagious Diseases Act; in 1920 she became Lady Mayoress in Bath.
