LETTER: TLS to Dr. Joseph Beattie.
SANGER TO THE DOCTOR WHO DELIVERED HER CHILDREN
AND ON FAMILY PLANNING IN INDIA
Sanger, Margaret. Typed letter signed by Margaret Sanger to Dr. Joseph Beattie, Tucson, May 6, 1952, two leaves, rectos only; congratulating him on fifty years in the medical profession.
Sanger writes to her colleague in praise of his long and distinguished career, and updates him on the lives of her children whom he delivered. In part:
How wonderful of you to remember me and send me this Dobbs Ferry Register congratulating you on your fiftieth anniversary in medicine. I could never forget you for your wonderful care of me during the birth of Grant and Peggy. You knew, of course, that the little girl died when she was six years old, and perhaps you knew that Grant is in surgery and lives in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. and is with that fine medical group in Mt. Kisco. He is the father of five young boys under ten, and just two weeks ago his wife gave birth to a little girl. Six children keep him and his wife on their toes, perhaps on their knees.
She also mentions her work with Planned Parenthood, an organization she founded to promote women's education on birth control and female health. When the first family planning and birth control clinic opened in 1916, Sanger was jailed for thirty days, and the organization remains controversial to this day.
... I am still working in the Planned Parenthood movement and am now directing and organizing a World Conference to be held in Bombay, India in November of this year. ... It is a wonderful tribute, and I join with them in congratulating you.
