Life Without and Life Within; or, Reviews, Narratives, Essays, and Poems.

[Fuller, Margaret]. Ossoli, Margaret Fuller. Life Without and Life Within; or, Reviews, Narratives, Essays, and Poems. Edited by her brother, Arthur B. Fuller. Boston: Brown, Taggard and Chase, 1860.

8vo.; brown cloth stamped in blind and gilt; light wear.

First edition of the final anthology of Fuller’s writing brought out by her brother; first issue (the second was the English issue), with the first variant spine stamping. Myerson A10.1.a. BAL 6505. Though in his preface Arthur Fuller states that only one item had been previously collected, BAL notes seven such pieces, though only one contains a textual variant. Fuller further notes that many others had appeared in The Tribune and The Dial, but claims “a large portion of it has never appeared at all in print, especially its poetical portions.” But he cautions that “it is even possible that among the poems one or more written by friends and sent her, or copied from some other author, may have crept in unawares; but this all possible pains have been taken to prevent.” He concludes his preface: “Such as it is, the volume is now before the public; it truly reveals her inner and outer life, and is doubtless the last of the volumes containing the writings of Margaret Fuller Ossoli.”
