LETTER: Autograph Letter Signed to Mr. Johnson.
Deland, Margaret. Four-page autograph letter signed to a "Mr. Johnson," almost certainly of the publishing firm Harper & Bros. [Boston], 35 Newbury St., n.d.: [ca. 1903].
Approx. 6.75" x 5.25" on integral leaves; previous folds, else fine. In part: "I am in search of information: What is the name of my book -- about to be published by Messrs Harper? When is it to come out? Is it permissible to ask the size of the edition? And can it be that any booksellers are so mad as to order it? Also, might a poor Worm suggest a little stirring up of Dr Lavendar’s People, with a view to catching some Christmas trade?" Clearly, Deland is looking to increase her sales. She writes further: "Also, is D. L. P. [i.e. Dr. Lavendar’s People, published in 1903] moving at all? How near the 15000 mark has it come? The Bobbs-Merrill people say if I will give them a book they will sell 300,000!!!!!" Deland follows this with an original drawing showing her rushing head-long from the front door of Harpers to the front door of Bobbs-Merril with a book under her arm.
