Milton Boarding School for Young Ladies.

19th-century Girls’ School Prospectus

[Education] Milton (NY) Boarding School for Young Ladies. Prospectus. [1846.]

8vo.; bifolium leaflet; light blue paper.

“Milton Boarding School for Young Ladies, By Phebe & Dorcas Hull, is situated between Milton Village and the Landing. The accommodations are ample, the location healthy and convenient…” This short introduction with terms (“$25 per quarter, without extra charge”) is followed by an alphabetical list of approximately 85 girls (including their home addresses) who have attended the school in the four years “previous to June, 1846.” The school must have been co-ed, at least at one time, caption notwithstanding, as the list of girls is followed by a shorter list of twenty-two boys. Milton is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, just south of Poughkeepsie. Though most of the students are from nearby counties (Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Columbia), one girl is from Port Huron, Michigan, another from Jamestown, N.Y., others from Oneida County (N.Y.), Long Island, New Jersey, and more.

A scarce piece of evidence of the existence of a school, and its founders, which we have been otherwise unable to trace.
