First edition of this anthology showcasing Arendt’s adept portraits of some of the most enigmatic figures of the 20th-century, including Pope John Paul XXIII, Karl Jaspers, Isak Dinesen, Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht and Randall Jarrell, among others. A presentation copy, inscribed to Harold Rosenberg and his wife May: For Harold and May in friendship Hannah January 1969. A number of these essays first appeared in The New Yorker, where Rosenberg served as resident art critic.
