Birth Control News.

Sanger, Margaret, contributor. Birth Control News. Volume 1; Number 1. Cleveland: Birth Control League of Ohio, (1916).

8vo.; two folded leaves; eight pages of text.

The inaugural issue of Birth Control News. Although not an officer or staff member, Sanger was the central contributor. The Birth Control League of Ohio, for which Birth Control News was printed, was established in 1916 as an organization advocating birth control reform. An extract from the League’s Constitution was included in this issue:

First—The modification of existing laws in such a manner as to allow physicians, nurses and other competent persons to give information concerning methods of preventing conception.

Second—the extension, under proper auspices, of the practice of family limitation as a means of reducing poverty, immortality, crime, physical and mental defectiveness and other ills.

Also included is a compelling rally cry that poignantly illustrates the optimism and conviction of the reform:

BIRTH CONTROL MEANS
A welcome and a fair start in life for every child.
Happier homes and stronger family ties.
Fewer paupers, criminals, degenerates and inefficients.
Healthier and happier men, women and children, better citizens and a stronger nation.
