ALS, "Isabella B. Hooker," to the Committee of Equal Rights Party," perhaps addressed at the close to the Hon. A.J. Rogers. N.d.
8vo.; two leaves, four pages.
A lengthy memo sent to the Honorable A.J. Rogers of the Committee of Equal Rights Party about Equal Rights for Women. In part:
I confess that I see no hope for any of the humanitarian projects you have at heart but through the advent of woman to political councils & responsibilities--& it is only because I firmly believe that her hour has come & that there are multitudes of motherly souls ready to meet the impending crisis & full of the wisdom of self abnegation that I can look calmly into the immediate future, which without her would surely be filled with storm & tempest & bloody conflicts almost without parallel in the world's history.
“She believes God is on her side, and talks of the false glory of those who have freed the slaves, and of their false promises to women in the wake of abolition.
“They have made the awful mistake of ascribing glory to themselves in the freeing of black men—while really the spirit of the oppressor has been in their midst from the moment of their full accession to power—& they have trampled upon white women & black, north & south as if they alone were without souls—At the bid of party necessity they have even gone own constitutional provisions & on their individual promises to leading women who withdrew opposition to such legislation on the assurance that when the rights of black men were well assured, those of women should receive immediate attention.
After this we will trust no party entirely; but will work out our own salvation by haunting election officers till they admit our votes—I am satisfied there is no other way.”
