Home Its Work and Influence, The [CPG Family Archive].

Gilman, Charlotte Perkins. The Home Its Work and Influence [CPG Family Archive]. New York: Charlton Publishing Company, 1910.

12mo, 347 pp.; + 6 of publisher’s ads for Charlotte Perkins Gilman titles; speckling and dampstain at latter pages at fore-edge with the dampstain affecting outer margins of the pages; offsetting to endpapers; dark red wove cloth; paper label at spine; minor wear to ends, tips and lower edge; about very good.

Second printing. Originally published in 1903, The Home extended some of the ideas Gilman had set out in Women And Economics. The book focused on her contention that “the home was the source of oppression for many women and that it needed to undergo major modifications in order to promote a healthier environment for all of its inhabitants” (The Diaries Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, by Denise Knight, ed.). Knight describes The Home as a “work that showcased Charlotte’s caustic wit.” As for Gilman herself she considered it “The most heretical—and the most amusing” of her books (The Living Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman). It is worth noting that in Charlton Company Gilman seemed to have found a sympathetic and supportive publisher. They printed her magazine, published her books and reissued previous books as documented by their ads at the end of the text. Scharnhorst 1095.
