Mimeographed Sheets: History of the Equality Issue in the Contemporary Women's Movement.

Sade, Janine. Mimeographed Sheets: History of the Equality Issue in the Contemporary Women’s Movement. [New York: The Feminists, November 21, 1969].

8-1/2 x 11” mimeographed sheets; 3 pp.; bright orange-gold paper, stapled at upper left hand corner; a few light touches of use; very good.

Sade subtitles this “National Organization for Women: Crisis and Splitup to Formation of the Feminists;”, accordingly, she provides a brief summary of the different views of power which caused divisiveness within the feminist movement. N.O.W.’s small leadership supported by a large membership caused some to point out that their own organization was recreating “the same hierarchical structure which has been oppressing women.” Sade details the subsequent splitting off of “The October 17th Movement” (later called “The Feminists”), the formation of the more radical “Redstockings” and “Women’s Liberation” groups and describes how women members attempted to resolve issues around who makes and who implements decisions. A useful, fascinating, informative, presumably firsthand account of the politics which roiled the first years of N.O.W. and the modern feminist movement. Krichmar 956.
