Moses, Belle. The Gray Knight: The Story of Robert E. Lee. Illustrated by Cameron Wright. New York: D. Appleton-Century Company, 1936.

8vo.; frontispiece illustration of Lee on horseback, peering into binoculars; other illustrations throughout; interior fresh and bright; grey cloth, stamped in navy, careful repair to lower left cover near hinge; yellow and blue pictorial dust-jacket with a different image of Lee on horseback; jacket lightly, evenly soiled, corners clipped; a nice copy.

First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed on the first blank: To Lady Gralston [?]/With best wishes and/cordial greeting/from/Belle Moses/Oct 30, 1936. A portrait of Lee as a man and as a military strategist, dedicated by the author to her father: β€œIn memory of/My Father/who fought for the Confederacy/from its rise until its fall/I dedicate this book.”

An early example of a woman writing a military biography – a phenomenon still uncommon in our day.
