Manuscript deed and monetary allotment to a daughter.

Woman’s Inheritance Rights at the Turn of the 19th Century

[Legal] Deed and Monetary Allotment of Joshua Ironmonger. Hampshire, England: 1801 .

2 folio leaves: 23 x 31 inches and 29 x 31 inches; manuscript ink on vellum; affixed together with a series of red wax seals over string ties along the foot of the leaves, and blue paper stamps along the top left margin; creased where folded; one 16 x 8 inches portion heavily soiled; occasional soiling elsewhere, not obscuring text.

A seventeenth-century will, bequeathing an inheritance to a daughter only if she marries:

…Dorothea shall take a husband and be married with the consent of her said mother, brothers, and overseers of this my last will and testament… but if she will otherwise dispose of herself, to have no parts of the said monies but what my dear wife shall think fit…

A remarkable survival, this stunning original document opens to nearly two-feet square; the verso is soiled but the external manuscript dockets are legible.
