MANUSCRIPT: Autograph poem: "The Levée en Masse."
Greenwell, Dora. Manuscript poems: “Home”; and “The Levee en Masse” (in English). 1870.
Two manuscript poems by Greenwell – poet, essayist, and suffragette, as well as a friend of Christina
Rossetti (they wrote poetry to each other). “Home” is one of Greenwell’s best-known poems, and is oftreprinted.
Our manuscript, of 11 lines, differs from the printed versions in lacking a title at this stage and
bearing only five or six punctuation marks over eleven lines.
The heavily annotated working copy of “The Levée en Masse,” of about 64 lines over four pages as well as a dozen prose lines of footnotes, was written during the Franco-Prussian war and celebrates France with references to Roland and the Maid of Orleans.
