First edition. One hundred short histories of prominent 19th-century Jews, with individual chapters on Grace Aguilar and Emma Lazarus. A presentation copy, inscribed on the first blank in Italian to Dr. Adolfo Moses, with his ownership signature penciled underneath. Given by Moses, in turn, to the Adath Israel Library in Louisville, with their bookplate and instruction slip on the front endpapers. With “Adas Israel, Sabbath School” stamped on the title page and first blank. Stern was one of the two leading Jewish publishers in Philadelphia in the latter part of the 19th century; their shop did much of the printing for the other local Jewish house, the Jewish Publication Society.
