Tel Aviv’s High School of Commerce
1939-40

[Judaica] Young Woman’s Photograph Album of Pre-Israel, Tel Aviv. Ca. 1939-1940.

Oblong folio; 16 black paper leaves, 12 verso and recto mounted with 139 black and white photographs, 4 blank; photographs dry, corner mounted; string-bound padded blue textured boards, 13” x 9.5”; metal Hebrew letter decoration to upper left front cover.

Album of black and white snapshot photographs and real photo postcards of a young female student at Tel Aviv’s High School of Commerce, ca. 1939-1940.

Most of the images include manuscript Hebrew inscriptions (translations of many available) to rear, most notably a series of six real photo postcards from her time at a camp for students on the banks of the Yarkon River, identifying Tel Aviv as part of Eretz, Yisrael.

Other images include numerous photo portraits of friends and family (both alone and in groups), beachside resort images, various activities (horseback riding, rifle shooting), tourism, archaeological sites, etc.

A warm collection of Jewish youth and youth culture in Mandatory Palestine. The smiling images of the young woman, her friends and family belie the dark and tumultuous events brewing elsewhere in the world.
