Scrapbook of New England Girls Camps.

[Camping] Twyeffort, Barbara. Scrapbook and Photo Album of New England Girls’ Camps. Various places: 1928-1940.

4to.; green cardboard string-tied scrapbook album measuring 12 3/4" x 10". 84 pages, 76 of
which contain 222 photos and approximately 20 pieces of ephemera mounted or glued with some
laid in. Photos range in size from 2" x 1 1⁄2" to 8" x 10" with most measuring 4 1⁄4" x 3", many
captioned.

An enormous album documenting Ms. Twyeffort’s (and to some degree her sister Virginia’s) life
at numerous girls’ camps in the Northeastern United States including Maricopa, Konewago,
Wabunaki, Aloha and Cube Mountain. Over 200 photos (including a few dozen with
contemporary hand coloring) show the girls playing volleyball and softball, swimming, camping,
hiking, rock climbing, sailing and a whole host of other activities. Ephemera includes postcards,
napkins, pencil sketches, invitations and flora samples.

Barbara was an experienced camper and guide, honored in 1937 as one of four girls to attain
Maine’s Junior Guide Certificate. There is a news clipping detailing her accomplishment as well
as an original photo of her receiving the certificate from Governor Barrows.

A warm and detailed archive of a female camper whose dedication to camp life shines through in
this compelling album.
