Jewish State, A.

Herzl, Theodor. A Jewish State. An attempt at a modern solution of the Jewish Question. Revised from the English translation of Miss Sylvie D’Avigdor, with special preface and notes by J. De Haas. New York: The Maccabaean Publishing Co., 1904.

8vo.; black and white photo of Herzl, tissue guard; inscription on front pastedown; blue flexible cloth, stamped in gilt.

First American edition. This edition was presented by the Maccabaean Publishing Co., which was known for its monthly magazine of Jewish life and literature, The Maccabaean (1901-1920). The Maccabaean was the organ for the American Federation of Zionists and Jacob De Haas (author of Theodor Herzl: A Biographical and Critical Study, 1927) was its editorial chairman. Published within months of Herzl’s death, this volume includes a preface by De Haas who writes that “this publication of his first Zionist writing becomes a tribute to his memory.” The recent atrocities and pogrom in Kishinev, Russia in 1903, gave an additional imperative to the plea for a Jewish nation, and for this scarce first appearance of the text in the United States.
