On the Pulse of the Morning. The Inaugural Poem.

Angelou, Maya. On The Pulse Of The Morning. The Inaugural Poem. New York: Random House, (1993).

Small folio; unpaginated; maroon wrappers; fine.

First edition. Read by the poet at the inauguration of President William Jefferson Clinton. The poem appeared in wrappers, and then some week later, in a hard cover edition. Likely both were printed in substantial numbers, but six years later the wrapper issue, the proper first printing, has disappeared from the market. To our knowledge President Clinton’s 1993 was the first presidential inauguration in which a woman (and an African-American) spoke as part of the formal inauguration ceremony. A landmark in the history of women as well as Afro-Americans in the United States; and, an especially desirable copy of the little volume reproducing Angelou’s text, in flawless condition with her exuberant signature.
