London: Chatto & Windus, 1956. First edition, first printing, INSCRIBED PRESENTATINO COPY. Original cloth in dustrwrapper. A lovely NEAR FINE clean, bright and tight copy in the VERY GOOD original very lightly rubbed, nicked, and darkened dustwrapper. An outstanding association copy from the author to her great unrequited love.

Iris Murdoch corresponded with Raymond Queneau for thirty years, beginning in 1946. His influence on her work cannot be overstated; indeed, she writes in one of their many hudnreds of letters: "Anything I shall ever write will owe so much, so much, to you" and "As I think about literature [...] I realize more and more how crucial for me is everything you write". Her first novel Under the Net is dedicated to him.
