First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, “Elizabeth Smith from Anzia Yezierska,” with an autograph letter signed, to Smith, with whom she worked on the screenplay adaptation of Hungry Hearts. Yezierska writes, “I cannot put into words my heartfelt appreciation of your splendid story of Hungry Hearts. So seldom have I found anyone to whom I can talk with such spontaneous directness as I have to you . . .” Though she adds that she will forward an inscribed copy of Hungry Hearts as a token of gratitude, she apparently sent, instead, this copy of Salome.
