The NYPL comments that “In 1931, when as many as five million American workers were jobless and the industrializing world seemed about to collapse, the relatively stable traditional community depicted in this beautifully written novel provided solace to its readers. It was the first of Willa Cather’s many books to become a best-seller.” Crane A17.a.i. NYPL Books of the Century, p. 197.
