The Sudden View

Bedford - Gollancz file is more interesting than the standard agenting fare from the 1950s and then a bit from the late 1980s when some rights reverted. 1950s stuff includes original typescript promotion material for various of her works, and agent correspondence / carbons / enclosures with various publication venues, including several signed letters and notes by Cass Canfield at Harper & Brothers. The most interesting stuff pertains to potential liable issues, as well as a lengthy typescript memo regarding “Sybille Bedford’s Complaints,” - typescript, 3 pp., feb 1, 1954, and a four page typescript carbon response to her point by point. The only material signed by Bedford is as follows:

Original contract signed by Bedford (and her witness in Rome), as well as Sheila Hodges as Director of Gollancz (and her witness in London).

TLS, “Sybille Bedford,” to Miss Hodges, August 20, 1952, offering two titles for the manuscript and explaining the suitability of each. In addition to The Sudden View she suggests The Train of the Day Before Yesterday. Also addressing her issues with the proposed cover design. 2 leaves, 2 pages.

TLS, “Sybille Bedford,” to Miss Hodges, November 17, 1952, addressing three “solicitor’s points in connection with The Sudden View.” One leaf, one page.

TLS, “Sybille Bedford,” to HV Matthews at Gollancz, Nov 23, 1962, about US rights, and payment terms. One leaf, one page.

TLS, “Sybille Bedford,” to Sheila Hodges at Gollancz, Dec 10, 1953, asking for the Harper’s contract so that she can address serial rights.
