A Late Cunard Publication,
Inscribed To Good Friends And Fellow Radicals
Cunard, Nancy. Nous Gens D'Espagne. [Perpignan: Imprimerie Labau, 1949].
8vo.; beige and red printed wrappers; covers lightly darkened, page edges lightly offset; overall, a fine copy of this fragile publication.
First and only edition of this small collection of Cunard’s anti-Fascist poems, printed entirely in French; 500 numbered copies, the entire edition; this is copy # 20. A presentation copy, inscribed beneath the colophon to longtime friends and fellow political activists Otto and Louise Theis: Dearest Louise, Dearest Otto, with the love of ever. Nancy.
Cunard met Australian journalist Otto Theis and his fiancée Louise Morgan in London in 1925. Theis became an ardent supporter of Cunard’s political publishing, helping her in 1930 to publicize Negro Anthology, a project then in the planning stages. Louise Theis was one of Cunard’s closest friends and one of the few long-time companions who remained loyal to her during her nervous breakdown of 1950. The significance of the Theis-Cunard friendship is detailed by Anne Chisholm in Nancy Cunard (London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1979, pp. 321-323).
