EPHEMERA: Pinprick painting.

[Suffrage] [Suffrage-New York, 1915], Buttonhole Tag: Vote "YES" FOR WOMAN SUFFRAGE. November 2nd 1915. [Rochester (New York)]: [Allied Printing], [1915].

Buttonhole Tag: 2 x 2". gold card stock with dark green string tie threaded through hole at top corner; printed on the diagonal; the same text at both sides: Vote / "YES" / FOR WOMAN SUFFRAGE November 2nd / 1915 (with printer's trade union logo). Surface wear with creases and crinkles and overall slight dinginess (due to age-toning). About very good.

When Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania held referenda on woman suffrage in 1915, suffrage forces marshaled themselves for what they considered a crucial opportunity to sway the populous Northeast states to the cause. The NAWSA's efforts were bolstered by an extraordinary bequest by publishing magnate Miriam Leslie (Mrs. Frank Leslie) to Carrie Chapman Catt and the NAWSA to establish the "Leslie Suffrage Commission". With Carrie Chapman Catt at the head, the Leslie Suffrage Commission printed and distributed leaflets, broadsides, banners, buttons, flyers and campaign materials (such as this buttonhole tag) in greater numbers and variety than ever before. This buttonhole tag—a remarkable survivor given the item's innate vulnerability is a very nice example and scarce.
