Anthony, Susan B. Typed letter signed “Susan B. Anthony” to E.M. Tomlinson. Rochester, New York: March 31, 1904; one leaf National American Woman Suffrage Association letterhead; 8.5” x 11”; creased where folded; recto only; with original envelope.
Anthony offers to send Mr. Tomlinson an index to supplement the one found in the book The Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony by Ida Husted Harper. She writes in part: “If you possess a copy of the ‘Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony’, I shall take pleasure in sending you a new and complete index of subjects for the same. - the one in the book is of names only.” Accompanying the letter is the publisher's announcement for the book, with portraits of both the author and Anthony; the announcement lists the full details of the upcoming book, including prices. Glued to the bottom of a sheet is a small typed note offering the book at a 20 percent discount if ordered directly from Anthony or Harper.
The letter’s recipient, E.M. Tomlinson, was a professor of New Testament Greek and literature at Alfred University in Alfred, New York, a town located less than 100 miles from Rochester, where Anthony and the National America Woman Suffrage Association were based.
