FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE TO HARRIET MARTINEAU
1 NIGHTINGALE, Florence. Notes on Hospitals. 3rd edn, enlarged and for the most part re-written. Longmans. 1863. Folio. Illus., 12 fold-out hospital plans, 3 fold-out tables of statistics. Orig. dark maroon glazed cloth by Edmonds & Remnants; some sl. rubbing. v.g. [39141]
With Presentation Inscription from the Author on title: ‘To Maria Martineau in remembrance of comfort and courage derived from her generous kindness. Offered by F.N. Jan. 1864.’ A second inscription, in Harriet Martineau’s hand, reads; ‘Given by F. Nightingale to Harriet Martineau in memory of Maria, March 1864. And left by H. Martineau to Jane L. Martineau.’ Martineau & Nightingale never met, but corresponded; when Nightingale appealed for help with her sanitary reform plans, Martineau responded with alacrity - her ‘England and Her Soldiers’ 1859 built on Nightingale’s Crimean War experiences. ‘The first requirement in a Hospital (is) that it should do the sick no harm.’ Maria, Harriet’s niece, was Harriet’s principal carer; with Jane, she acted as secretarial assistant as Harriet’s health declined.
