Every Woman Her Own Lawyer.
[Legal issues]. Bishop, George. Every Woman Her Own Lawyer. A private guide in all matters of law of essential interest to women, and by the aid of which every female may, in whatever situation, understand her legal course and redress, and be her own legal adviser… New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, Publishers, (1858).
8vo.; contemporary ownership signature; hinges cracked; fore-edge dampstained; light occasional foxing; brown cloth; leather spine stamped in gilt and blind; spotted and worn.
First edition of this exhaustive examination of women’s protection under the laws of different states in matters concerning marriage, divorce, separation, “discarded wives,” “deserted wives,” and widowhood; property, trusts, annuities, and deeds of gift; guardians, wards, minors, and illegitimate children; arrest of females for debt; suits by and against married women; medical maltreatment; seduction, false pretenses in courtship, bigamy, adultery, and just causes for leaving a husband.
A rare book—no copies are listed in the NUC—issued by a “popularizing” publisher in a relatively inexpensive format, a possible cause of its rarity. Our copy has the added poignant element of a rather elaborate and labored ownership signature of a contemporary female reader—“Ann Eliza Ryder 1860”—suggesting the work quickly found its targeted audience.
