Heirs of Yesterday.

Jewish San Francisco Life

Wolf, Emma. Heirs of Yesterday. Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co., 1900.

8vo.; preliminaries faintly offset; green cloth, decoratively stamped in black and gilt; covers lightly rubbed, spine a touch used.

First edition of an uncommon novel describing daily Jewish life in San Francisco at the turn of the century. The author, herself a Jewish resident of San Francisco, includes many details of the life and obstacles faced by Jews; her protagonists include many strong female characters. This copy includes the publisher’s catalogue at rear advertising two other Emma Wolf works: Other Things Being Equal, a tale of Jewish-Christian intermarriage which “presents a beautiful picture of the peace, the pure morality, and the domestic tranquillity and joy which the author affirms almost universally pervade Jewish homes” (New York Home Journal), and The Joy of Life, a story of two brothers veering between capitalist and humanist values.
