Sarah and Her Daughter.

Dedicated To The Founder Of Hadassah

Pearl, Bertha. Sarah and Her Daughter. New York: Thomas Seltzer, 1920.

8vo.; red cloth, stamped in gilt and blind; hinges tender; else very good.

First edition, second printing, issued in April 1920, the same month as the first; number of copies unknown. A novel set in the New York tenements, Pearl’s narrative of New York Jewish life centers upon the struggles of family matriarch Sarah and her daughter Minnie. Curiously, despite the book’s apparent popularity, neither the book nor the author are listed in the standard bibliographical references: (UJE; BGWL; Blain’s FCLE; HAWH).

The book is dedicated “to Henrietta Szold and her Sister Adele.” One year after this novel was published, Szold, who founded Hadassah in 1912, embarked on her lengthy mission to Palestine, where she oversaw Zionist settlement and medical operations.
