First edition. Pamphlet explaining the origins and purpose of “the Order of the Sacred Temple,” a type of a secret society for women founded as the female counterpart to the Masons by Adelle Hazlett, a public speaker actively involved in the women's suffrage movement and elected president of the Northwestern Woman Suffrage Association in 1870. The pamphlet reads, “[the Order] is an institution designed for the mental and moral improvement of woman. Its membership is limited to the female relatives of worthy Master Masons. The first Sacred Temple was organized in Hillsdale, Michigan, on the 9th day of July, 1867.” It goes on to render letters between Hazlett and the Hon. S.C. Coffinberry, Grand Master of the Masons in Michigan, before the forming of the ‘Order.’
