Maria, ou le Malheur d'Etre Femme.
(Wollstonecraft, Mary) Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft. Maria. Ou le Malheur d’Étre Femme. Ouvrage posthume. Imité de l’anglais par B. Ducos. Paris: Maradan, 1798.
12mo.; preliminaries dampstained; lacking the front endpaper; blue paper-covered boards; contemporary calf spine, stamped in gilt. In a specially made cloth slipcase.
First French edition—and first translation into any language—of Wollstonecraft’s posthumously published unfinished autobiographical novel, Maria; or, The Wrongs of Woman. The first edition had appeared earlier that year in two volumes of William Godwin’s edition of Wollstonecraft’s Posthumous Works, described by him as an “unfinished production of genius.” For this French edition, however, Ducos—a linguist and literateur manqué turned financier—reconstructed three unfinished chapters from Wollstonecraft’s notes. Scarce. Windle A8e.
