First edition, one of 2000 numbered copies, 2150 copies the entire edition. A presentation set, each copy inscribed by Beauvoir in French to writer Bernie Wolfe, who was briefly personal assistant and bodyguard to Leon Trotsky (during his exile in Mexico) and an associate of many of the political extremists of his day; additional close with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Volume one is inscribed as follows (in our translation from the French): For Bernie Wolfe / who has done something or other & made me his great friend / With all my love / S. de Beauvoir. Volume two: For Bernie Wolfe / with my constant friendship we are friends “en poche” / S. de Beauvoir.
On January 24th, 1947, Beauvoir travelled to New York and wrote to Jean-Paul Sartre: “If I want to understand New York, I must talk to New Yorkers. There are names in my notebook but they don’t bring any faces to mind. It will be necessary to speak on the telephone in English with people who don’t know me and whom I don’t know.” Philippe Soupault had organized a series of lectures at American Universities for her, and Richard Wright introduced her to his circle of friends including Bernard Wolfe, author of several television plays & novels including his best known 1952 science-fiction novel, Limbo.
