GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL
[Education] Evans, Florence. [Scrapbook]: Deering High School Scrapbook. Portland, Maine,
1930.
Small quarto measuring 9” x 11”; string-tied paper-covered boards with “scrap book” stamped on the front cover.
A scrapbook kept by a Portland, Maine school girl, Florence Evans, surrounding her senior year and graduation in 1930 from Deering High School complete with 67 sepia-toned or black and white snapshots with captions, with additional programs, newspaper clippings, and other related ephemera. The early section of photos show a beach trip with Florence and her classmate friends posing by the seaside with humorous captions as well as photos of photos. There are also snapshots of nicely dressed girls, a group at an amusement part posed in front of a roller coaster, and around the school campus. Evans was a part of the Deering girl’s basketball team for the season of 1929-1930 and her scrapbook features a hand painted program from a banquet held for the team and their fans, newspaper clippings, one discussing a star player and another about their new captain. She kept up with other school events, cutting out clippings of the Vaudeville show, of cheerleading with a clipping of the head cheerleader, Don Loveday, track, and girl’s tennis which she was also a part of. Several pages have programs and cards from Evans’ 1930 graduation from Deering and includes a clipping of her which states she planned on attending Simmons College to continue her education. An interesting collection displaying a girl’s high school activities and education in the late 1920s.
