Faith of a Jewish Woman, The.
[Judaica]. Montagu, Lily H. The Faith of a Jewish Woman. Keighly: Wadsworth & Co., the Rydal Press, (1943).
12mo.; front endpaper worn; tan paper-covered boards, printed label affixed to spine, very lightly frayed at spine edges; library call number in ink on front and rear panels.
First edition, second printing, reprinted one month after the first printing. In this volume, rather than focusing on her social work, Montagu tells of her spiritual life. She records the progression of her faith from her childhood through her involvement with the Jewish Religious Union and the World Union for Progressive Judaism, from ritual observance to spiritual faith. Openly and simply, she writes of her doubts and her pain at disagreeing with her father’s beliefs. But, there are also episodes of great joy and inspiration in the journey. Montagu ends her book:
We must each contribute by the conduct of our lives to the strengthening of our communal ideal inherited from the past and intended for an infinite future. We can serve in this most holy cause only if we ourselves, besides inheriting our mission, become convinced of its truth through our own passionate faith supported by actual communion with our Divine Father in prayer.
