Alice H. James [Alice Howe Gibbens James) was the wife of William James, and Jessie Hodder the mistress of Alfred LeRoy Hodder, writer, friend and neighbor of the Jameses on Washington Square. Jessie Hodder used Alfred's name but was not his wife ever in law, and was an interesting woman: a pianist whose daughter Olive was born at William and Alice James' house in Florence.Later, with Alice's encouragement Jessie sued Alfred Hodder for bigamy in marrying another woman, but Hodder died before the suit came to court. Later Jessie Hodder was known as a prison reformer in Massachusetts.
