Presidential Ballot.
Scarce Ballot for Lockwood's Presidential Run
Lockwood, Belva A., and Marietta L. Stow. Presidential Ballot with Jugate Portraits of Lockwood and Running-mate Stow. New York: National Equal Rights Party, [1884].
3 x 17"; recto only; torn cleanly in half at a horizontal fold.
Scarce ballot issued by the National Equal Rights Party in New York, with a patriotic image incorporating portraits of both Lockwood and her running-mate, Marietta L. Stow, from San Francisco. Not surprising, the names of several women appear elsewhere on the ballot, for example Matilda Joslyn Gage (an “elector at large”), and Mary P Pell, Clara M. Brinkerhoff, Charlotte A. Von Cort, Harriett L. Dolsen, Helen M. Loder, Lydia S. Hasbrouck, Ida Paige Butler, and Kate Stoneman, each representing a different district of New York state.
We have been unable to locate a reference to this item going back through 30 years of auction records and reference materials. Given the ethereal nature of Lockwood’s bid for the presidency, it is likely that her budget for campaign materials such as this was small.
