LETTER: ALS to Mrs. Shedd.
Letter from Sarah Orne Jewett to “Mrs. Shedd”
Jewett, Sarah Orne. Autographed letter signed, “Sarah O. Jewett” to “Mrs. Shedd,” Boston, April 16, no year (ca. 1908); one leaf folded to make four pages; two pages covered with black ink; lightly soiled; creased where folded.
Jewett thanks Mrs. Shedd and her husband for their “kind notes about Miss Wormeley.” The balance of the letter reads,
I cannot help being anxious still and feeling so sorry for all her discomfort and weakness – so impossible to do much about it. It is hard to be ill but especially hard for such a nature as our dear friend’s. It is some comfort to know that her doctor’s visits count for such a help and pleasure [2] whether she is sick or well; and I think that her good Margaret is there; this she told me she owed to Dr. Shedd’s forethought. I wish that I were near enough to be of some use, but I hope that if there is anything I can do she will be kind enough to tell me. Believe me with kindest regard and true thanks to you both. Yours most truly,
The friend referenced is likely Katharine Prescott Wormeley (1830-1908), American author, translator,
philanthropist, political pioneer (through her work with the US Sanitary Commission) and mutual friend
of Sarah Orne Jewett and Annie Fields.
