Letters to a Christian Friend on the Fundamental Truths of Judaism.
[Judaica]. Rothschild, Clementina. Letters to a Christian Friend on the Fundamental Truths of Judaism. Translated from the German. London: Simpkin, Marshall and Co., 1881.
12mo.; hinges cracked in front and rear; blue cloth, spine and extremeties lightly worn.
Second edtion of these touching letters by a woman dying at the age of twenty. Published after Rothschild’s death in 1865, the volume’s memorial dedication, written in 1869, explains: “she wrote the following letters in the hope of imbuing those who might read them with a loftier conception of the sublime Truth of that beloved Faith, which upheld her through long days of suffering and pain.” The nine letters cover such areas as missionaries, the doctrine of the Messiah, and original sin, specifically pointing out the differences between Christianity and Judaism in these matters. Rothschild’s tone is one of explanation, not exhortation; she was apparently well versed in philosophical matters and in Christian dogma. Her work blends simple piety with cosmopolitan intelligence and tolerance, bearing testimony to the dual life nineteenth-century Jews led in Europe.
