Down With the Anarchists!
[Goldman, Emma and Alexander Berkman]. Leaflet: “Down With the Anarchists!” San Francisco, Cal.: The Blast; New York City, Mother Earth Pub. Ass'n, ND, but c. 1910-1914.
Leaflet: 6-1/16 x 8-7/8,” single sheet 12-1/8 x 8-7/8,” folded into 4to, printed on all four sides; printed black on off-white stock; paper considerably age-toned (likely accelerated by its acid content) with a little smudging at inside leaf; mild ruffling and tiny nicks to foretips; given the ephemeral nature of this item, in nice condition. In custom-made lettercase.
First edition. “What do the Anarchists really want” is the thrust of the leaflet, which attempts to assuage public concern that Anarchists are simply political terrorists. While “Anarchists, as well as others, have sometimes committed acts of violence” no one holds the Republican Party or the Democratic Party responsible for an act of violence committed by one of its members. The leaflet declares: “The man who flings his whole life into the attempt...to protest against the wrongs of his fellow-men, is a saint compared to the active and passive upholders of cruelty and injustice, even if his protest destroys other lives besides his own.” The leaflet is issued over the imprint of the Blast Group, Group Freedom, Italian Anarchist Group Volonta and the Union of Russian Workers, “per Emma Goldman / Alexander Berkman.”
