Yellow Wall Paper, The.
Gilman, Charlotte Perkins Stetson. The Yellow Wall-Paper. Boston: Small, Maynard & Company, 1901.
Second edition; unnoted by Scharnhorst. A presentation copy, Inscribed on the front endpaper: 1889 Charlotte Perkins Gilman 1922. Written as a lesson to Dr. S. Weir Mitchell--it worked! The binding was designed by Elisha Brown Bird (1867-1943), an MIT-trained architect and illustrator who later took to designing posters, book covers, sheet music, etc. His work appeared in the first exhibition of the Society of Arts and Crafts in 1897, “where he was recognized as one of the most promising young artists.” His cover design for The Yellow Wall-Paper ranks among his finest and most distinctive designs.
