Second American edition, following the Philadelphia publication by William Gibbons earlier that
year. With a contemporary ownership signature in ink to half title: Miss Rachel Kingsley’s / Book given
by a friend 23 November 1795. Rachel Kingsley (1777-1843) was the daughter or Enoch Kingsley of
Northampton, Massachusetts. In 1804 she married Williams college graduate Reverend Levi Field (1780-
1820) of Leverett, Massachusetts, a descendant of David Dudley Field, the early New England clergyman
and writer. The couple settled in Wilmington, Vermont, where they had eight children. Rachel Lyman
Field, the Newbery Award-winning writer, is a descendant.
