Why Working Women Want the Vote.
[Suffrage, NY]. NY State Woman Suffrage Party. Handbill: “Why Working Women Want the Vote.” [NP, but New York]: [N.Y. State Woman’s Suffrage Party], [ND, but 1917].
Handbill: 6 x 9-1/2,” printed black on light brown paper. Union slug at lower margin. Fine.
The handbill announces a mass meeting “Under the Auspices of the / Industrial Section of Third Campaign District / N.Y. State Woman’s Suffrage Party / To Celebrate Passage Suffrage / Amendment by Legislature.” The scheduled speakers include Mary Drier, Leonora O'Rielly, Melinda Scott and others with James Nolan, President of the Central Federation of Labor chairing. The handbill reflects the exuberance that greeted passage of the 1917 woman suffrage referendum by the New York state legislature, the highly-organized character of the New York Woman’s Suffrage Party (organized by campaign districts and than by sections within each district) and the ties between the suffrage movement and the labor movement cultivated largely through the efforts of Harriot Stanton Blatch. An excellent example documenting important facets of the 1917 suffrage campaign.
