Alide.
Lazarus, Emma. Alide. An episode of Goethe’s life. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., 1874.
8vo.; front free endpaper missing; first blank offset; discreet bookseller’s stamp to front pastedown; green cloth stamped in blind and gilt; very light wear to extremities, else a lovely copy. In a specially made quarter-morocco slipcase.
First edition of Lazarus’s third book and her only novel, a well-received volume incorporating “whole passages,” as she disclaims in her preface, “from the autobiography of Goethe”:
Wherever it has been possible, he has been allowed to speak for himself, and thus no
imagination has been exercised in the portrayal of his character. “Alide Duroc,” on the
contrary, is a purely imaginary creation, though her story is that of Frederika Brion.
A strange and unaccountably scarce book: This is only the first copy we have encountered in twenty years; nor could we trace any other in commerce except for a shabby copy at auction in the early 1980s.
