Women, Plumbers and Doctors.

[Labor]. Plunkett, Mrs. H.M. Women, Plumbers, and Doctors; or, Household Sanitation. Showing that, if women and plumbers do their whole sanitary duty, there will be comparatively little occasion for the services of doctors. Illustrated. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1885.

8vo.; frontispiece illustration; other illustrations throughout; navy cloth, stamped in gilt; light wear to extremities; spine frayed.

First edition of Plunkett’s instructional book detailing how women, whom she describes as the “new class,” can prevent the spread of germs and disease by fulfilling their “sanitary duties.” Plunkett takes a largely scientific approach to hygiene, including 50 hand-drawn illustrations of common household plumbing and sewage systems, and guidelines for how to test water for contamination. Plunkett is unknown in standard references.
