American artist associated with abstract expressionism. Frankenthaler writes to American poet James Schuyler (1923-91). "I liked what you said, it made sense to me, I liked the way you said it. The part about going-against-the-grain-courage was a Big thing to say. Bob [husband Robert Motherwell] and I leave Wednesday... We've rented a house in Italy (near San Remo & Genoa) with 2 studios where we expect to work until mid Oct...." She gives the address in Alassio and continues, "write some more good poems. Bob was extremely interested in your statement in the New American Poetry, and pleased you mentioned the Dada book..,We both liked the poems... It's much easier for poets to explain why to painters. I guess I'll have to paint you a picture*..." The asterisk leads to a note which reads, "*please collect, fall 1960." She signs, "Helen."
Frankenthaler painted, "Postcard for James Schulyer" inspired by their correspondence during the summer of 1960 as noted here. She began the work in 1960 and completed it in 1967. Frankenthaler and artist Robert Motherwell were married from 1958 to 1971. In 1960, The Jewish Museum and the Emmerich Gallery, both in New York, held exhibits of her paintings, and Schuyler wrote about it as Frankenthaler alludes to here. Four pinholes and margin stain in upper left corner. front and back. Above her printed name and address, she has written in pencil, "Please type - one original - one carbon." Red pencil brackets and underlining in various places.
