Beach, Elizabeth T. Porter. Pelayo: An Epic Of The Olden Moorish Time. New York: D. Appleton and Company, (1864).

This romantic verse of the exploits of Don Roderick—“the last king of the Visi-Goths”—written in Popean rhyming couplets, was the only book Beach published. Two years before Pelayo, however, she wrote the lyrics to a song commemorating the exploits of the frigate Cumberland during the battle of Hampton Roads. Her song—“The Last Broadside”—was called “the best lyric our War has produced” by William Cullen Bryant.
